We believe that if we give ambitious young people opportunities, we will be able to find a cure for every heart disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and affects all of us! From the devastating shock of sudden cardiac death to the frustration of seeing loved ones suffer from chronic heart failure and atrial fibrillation; there is so much to fight for. Come and join us in our mission to find a cure for all heart diseases.
Our research tradition dates back to 1901, when Karl Wenckebach was the first to combine clinical medicine with experimental cardiology. By translating clinical observations into detailed experiments, he was able to discover the mechanisms of heart rhythm disorders long before the introduction of the electrocardiogram. His legacy and research philosophy still resonate through UMCG experimental cardiology! Clinical problems are translated into experiments, the results of which are tested in clinical trials and if successful, they become available for patients with heart disease. In this way we improve the treatment for patient with heart disease and help our colleagues.
“There are very few places in the world where heart research and clinical cardiology are so well connected.”
With a team of cardiologists, post-docs, PhD students, medical students and research staff, we continue to discover new causes and new treatments for heart disease. We provide a unique opportunity to work from state-of-the art experimental technologies, through advanced artificial intelligence applications, to improve clinical understanding and develop novel therapies for complex cardiac diseases. In the past decades we have significantly contributed to better prevention and treatment of several heart diseases, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.
UMCG cardiology research center is one of the largest heart research centers in the Netherlands, embedded in the largest academic cardiology clinic in the Netherlands. There are very few places in the world where clinical cardiology and heart research and are so well connected. With 30 cardiologists, 16 principal investigators and more than 50 PhD students and post-docs, all the knowledge and experience that you will require are literally at your doorstep.
The UMCG heart center is the only clinic in the North that trains physicians to become cardiologists. At any given time, there will be about 30 cardiologist in training working at the UMCG heart center. Every year four talented medical doctors get the chance to pursue their dream of becoming a cardiologist. We believe that science is a fundamental part of clinical cardiology and we offer cardiologist in training the opportunity to do research. Several cardiologists in training even have their own research group. Do you want to become a cardiologist? Then join one of our research groups today and get off to a great start.
We are always looking for people that share our ambition to find a cure for heart disease. You will work in multidisciplinary teams and with an inspiring mix of young, creative people and world renowned, international experts in the field. Through our large international network, you will also collaborate with scientists from around the world. You will have the opportunity to present your results at international conferences and will publish articles in the top journals in the field of cardiology. The benefits of research at UMCG cardiology at a glance?
We strongly believe that science is a fundamental part of clinical cardiology. Joining the UMCG cardiology research center today will be an important first step to ensure your future in clinical cardiology tomorrow. Come and work on tomorrow’s innovations today and be inspired.
