Atrial fibrillation progression risk factors and associated cardiovascular outcome in well-phenotyped patients: data from the AF-RISK study
AF- RISK is a multi-center, prospective, observational study aiming to identify factors associated with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) progression. This first analysis included data corresponding to 392 patients with recent-onset paroxysmal or persistent AF who were followed for 1 year.
Complete phenotyping was done to better evaluate the patients’ profile and progression was assessed by Holter monitoring and event recorders. The results showed that 13% of the total number of patients developed AF progression (according to the definition used on AF-RISK), while those who had persistent AF presented a higher tendency to progression than those with paroxysmal AF at baseline. Larger left atrial volume, NT-proBNP and PAI-1 levels showed a significant association with AF progression.
