Yordi van de Vegte

Alumnus

I am doing my MD-PhD in the Interventional & Translational Cardiology research group. The focus of my PhD is the genetics of cardiovascular and lifestyle risk factors. By studying the genetics of these risk factors, I aim to improve the understanding of biological mechanisms underlying inter-individual differences in cardiovascular disease risk and entangle cause and consequence in the web of risk factors ultimately leading to disease.

I have a background in human movement sciences and medicine. The combination of data-analytics and a clear clinical perspective, from both a primary and secondary prevention point-of-view, is what drew me to this PhD project.

Current activities

Ongoing projects focus on the genetics of several cardiovascular and lifestyle risk factors and their relationship with cardiovascular disease in large scale biobanks, including the UK Biobank. Current projects include the study of the causal role of resting heart rate and sedentary behaviors in the development of coronary artery disease.
